Finding your Colorado Deer

GMUResearch is setup you help you research your Colorado hunting area by season and unit, rather than huntcode.

The first thing we tell people, or ask when responding to a post on a forum, is which season they are considering. Our data is broken into the following categories (click on the one that interests you to get started). The next page will give you a list of the GMU’s, which you can click to start researching historical hunting statistics dating back close to 8 years.

Archery
Muzzleloader
First Rifle
Second Rifle
Third Rifle
And Fourth Rifle

Why pick one season over another? Weather, physical conditioning, the number of points you have, or maybe just weapon choice.

Once you have a season picked out, you can start narrowing down the unit you’d like to apply for or hunt. We have (hopefully) given you some additional tools to help you along the way.

One of those is a basic mule deer summer range map. This is a statewide map that also shows the unit boundaries. It is static. If you’d like to zoom into a more specific unit or maybe even drainage, then you probably want to access our interactive mapping site, GMUHuntingmaps.com. This is a free site, but we do require you register on our forum.

You may find that you will not have the preference points necessary to hunt your chosen unit this year. Not a problem. We also have a list of under subscribed units based on last years draw. These units had tags available after both draws. Not the greatest of units, but you can still get on animals if you know where to look.

Or maybe you are just trying to figure out which huntcodes to pick for your 2nd, 3rd or 4th choice. Our leftover tag report shows how many tags were leftover after each subsequent draw.

Now let’s say you know what huntcode you want to apply for. We can help you out there to. Our quick odds check page will show you how many other people applied for your huntcode last year (resident & non resident), what the huntcode tag quota was, and even help you calculate your drawing odds.

Hopefully we covered the basic research needs of our elk hunters. If not, please drop me a note. I normally respond within 24 hours if I’m not out working somewhere.

Good luck this year, and remember to have fun.
